Partners reach fish passage milestone ahead of schedule in the Chesapeake Bay watershed

Progress report shows 1,126 new miles of stream were opened to fish passage in the basin between 2012 and 2016, surpassing the 1,000-mile goal set by partners.

In 2014, partners in the Chesapeake Bay Program set a goal to continually increase habitat to support sustainable migratory fish populations in the Chesapeake Bay watershed’s freshwater rivers and streams, with a target of opening 1,000 additional stream miles to fish passage by 2025.

A new progress report and fish passage map on the Chesapeake Progress website shows that they have already exceeded that goal. Between 2012 and 2016, 1,126 additional miles of streams were opened to fish passage in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. Progress toward this outcome is measured against a 2011 baseline of 2,510 stream miles open to the migration of fish.
