Title: "Interactive effects of climate change with nutrients, mercury, and freshwater acidification on key taxa in the North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative region”
Presenter: Fred Pinkney, Environmental Contaminants Biologist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Chesapeake Bay Field Office, Annapolis, MD
Abstract: The interactive effects of climate change and contaminants were evaluated in an international workshop in 2011. A multidisciplinary team applied the workshop concepts to identify key stressors in the North Atlantic LCC region. Using a case study approach, I present our findings on three stressors with sufficient North Atlantic LCC region–specific information for an informed discussion. I describe climate change interactions with a contaminant (mercury), and two complex environmental phenomena—eutrophication and freshwater acidification. I also discuss taxa case studies of direct and indirect effects of climate change on amphibians and freshwater mussels. Finally, I present research needs for each of the case studies.
