Collision with wind turbines is an increasing conservation concern for migratory birds that are already facing many threats. Existing collision risk models take into account parameters of the wind turbines and bird flight behavior in order to estimate collision probability and mortality rate. We studied flight characteristics and flight behavior of a threatened shorebird, the piping plover (Charadrius melodus), at six study sites along the Atlantic coast of the United States. We used an existing collision risk model to predict the number of piping plovers potentially killed per year at each site given flight parameters and varying wind turbine specifications.
