Small, temporary wetlands provide critical habitat for breeding amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates, but the seasonal nature of these ecosystems makes them hard to find, and hard to protect. The Vernal Pool Data Cooperative was created in response to the need for a comprehensive, spatial database of vernal pool locations in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region.

In the Fall 2015 issue of the Vermont Center for Ecostudies' Field Notes newsletter, project lead Steve Faccio explains how this effort helps to address a "glaring blind spot in knowledge of critical habitats in the Northeast," and can help align researchers, practitioners, and resource managers across this region to strengthen the conservation of vulnerable wetlands and associated species.
