Coastal geologist Tracy Rice will lead a webinar describing her project to inventory sandy beach and tidal inlet habitats within the U.S. Atlantic Coast breeding range of piping plover from Maine to North Carolina using imagery from Google Earth, Google Maps, state agencies, municipalities, and private organizations. Rice compared the location, status, and condition of potential plover breeding grounds before Hurricane Sandy, immediately after the storm, and three years after post-storm recovery efforts, to provide a habitat baseline that will help resource managers anticipate future change.
The resulting products include habitat assessment reports, Microsoft Excel databases, Google Earth data layers, and Data Basin shapefiles.
This project was funded by a Department of the Interior Hurricane Sandy Resilience grant, facilitated by the North Atlantic LCC.
