Maine DMR operates rotary screw traps to enumerate emigrating Atlantic salmon smolts on the Narraguagus River (Little Falls and Route 9), Sandy River (Lane Road), and East Machias River (Jacksonville Bridge). We are capturing (and recapturing!) salmon smolts daily at each site. The rain event on 30 April kicked the run back into high gear on the Narraguagus and Sandy rivers. Record high daily naturally-reared catch was observed at Route 9 and at the Sandy site! Catch is peaking now at Little Falls and the initial wave of smolts has passed the East Machias traps.
