Final Rule for Atlantic Salmon Critical Habitat
When a species is listed as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act, the Act requires us to designate critical habitat for the species within a year of the listing. We designated critical habitat for the Gulf of Maine distinct population segment of Atlantic salmon in 2009. The critical habitat for the endangered wild Atlantic salmon Maine population is the freshwater range of watersheds from the Androscoggin River northward along the Maine coast to the Dennys River, an area that includes the Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers. The critical habitat designation brings extra attention to the habitats that are essential to the species and that may need special management considerations or protections.
